Morality

Many believers claim that without their god there can be no “objective” basis for morality.  They are correct but what they don’t understand is that even with their god there still is no “objective” basis for morality!  Is morality based on whatever there god says is moral?  If so how is that objective?  Isn’t that just the opinion of that god?  How can we know whether a god is a good god or a bad god unless we judge them by some other standard?

For example since Christians love to sing about how good and holy and perfect there god is, by what standard are they using to call him good or holy or perfect?  Is he good simply because he is god (why am I using gender specific pronouns?), isn’t that just a case of might makes right?  Hypothetically then if Satan turned out to be the creator of the universe and humanity and he commanded people to punch babies in the face when they are born, would that make it moral and good?

Christian morality is an illusion.  It ultimately boils down to morality is whatever there god says, which is nothing more than might makes right.  There is nothing objective about might makes right morality.  The strongest most powerful one decides the way things are going to be whether you like it or not.  That isn’t morality according to most people.  Certainly not objective morality.

Morality is a combination of evolution and social constructs.  From an evolutionary standpoint it is a set of characteristics and behavioral tendencies we inherited from our ancestors partly through genes and partly through values.  Let’s say in early human history, there were different populations of humans or prehuman species.  The populations more like to survive were the ones with a majority that held beneficial traits and values than the ones that did not survive.  These traits and values then are passed on while the others are not.
If Christians looked at Christian history they wouldn’t see much values there at all.  Christians have participated in slavery (blacks), racism (blacks, hispanics, native americans), sexism (women), murder (killing heretics, witches), genocide (native americans), wars (crusades, protestant wars).

Christians seem to think that whatever form of morality they adhere to today, has been this way since the days of Jesus LOL.  The Christians today think they are following biblical morality just as the Christian slave owners of the 1700′s thought they were following biblical morality.  Plus Christians can’t even agree with one another on what constitutes biblical morality.  You have Christians on both side of the following issues:
  • Abortion
  • War
  • Death Penalty
  • Homosexuality
  • Divorce
  • Immigration
  • Welfare programs and treatment of the poor
  • Capitalism vs Socialism
  • Guns/Self Defense
Wow that biblical morality sure is crystal clear from the mouth of god.  So in closing then, Christian morality is not objective but rather the result of might makes right and it is not objective as demonstrated by the differences of opinions among Christians themselves.
